However, Imatest supports other development systems to varying degrees. Contact us for details.Load images directly from Omnivision sensors. This eliminates the need to capture images separately, store them, then load them individually into Imatest, dramatically improving productivity.Download and Install SoftwareTo download Imatest software, go to store.imatest.com/software.htmlDownload and open the self-extracting executable (Imatest-IS-3.n.exe). This will install the Imatest Master edition and the Matlab Compiler Runtime (MCR), which is required for Imatest to run.Installer “Choose Components” window with Matlab libraries selected (Slow; select only if the libraries have not been installed.)The installer checks for the folder corresponding to the current MCR version (v8.10 as of October 2013). Matlab Libraries is checked if the folder is not found; otherwise it is unchecked. On rare occasions you may want to change this setting. Follow the remaining directions for installation. You will be able to run Imatest in evaluation mode for a limited time after you install it. If you’ve purchased it, open Imatest and press Help, License Manager (Activate). This executable will produce a file named preovt.key that is machine specific, i.e. the generated key file will work for only the machine for which it was generated.Contact support at Omnivision ( and supply the preovt.key file. From the preovt.key file, the contact at Omnivision will produce the key needed to enable Omnivision support in Imatest.Place the key file supplied by Omnivision into the same directory as the Imatest IS executable.With the key file in place, Omnivision support is enabled in Imatest.Preparing the CameraConnect the camera to the computer and launch Omnivision’s OVTAPantherM.exe. In focus (you don’t even need a lens to measure sensor uniformity); the goal is to measure lens light falloff and/or sensor uniformity, not features of the subject. For typical measurements, set exposure compensation to overexpose by about one f-stop. (You may, however, use any exposure you choose.)Save the image as a RAW file or maximum quality JPEG.Imatest LED LightboxTo obtain even illumination We recommend the Imatest LED LIghtbox, which features excellent illumination uniformity (90-95%), dimming over a range of 30 lux to 10,000 lux in standard models (with options as low as 1 lux and up to 100,000 lux), selectable color temperatures (3100K, 4100K, 5100K, 5500K, 6500K, NIR 850nm, NIR 940nm), and can be used with Imatest Dynamic Range and other transmissive charts. Imatest lightboxes are compared here.To run Uniformity,Start Imatest and click on Uniformity.Very large files (height x width x colors over 40 MB) sometimes caused memory overflow problems with (older) 32-bit systems. Files over 40 or 80 MB can be automatically reduced 1/2x linearly (using 1/4 the memory). Click Settings, Options III (in the Imatest main window) and make the appropriate setting in LARGE FILES (Uniformity, Distortion). This should be unnecessary with recent versions of Imatest.Open the image file.Multiple file selection Several files can be selected in Imatest Master using standard Windows techniques (shift-click or control-click). Depending on your response to the multi-image dialog box you can combine (average) several files or run them sequentially (batch mode).Combined (averaged) files are useful for measuring fixed-pattern noise (at least 8 identical images captured at low ISO speed are recommended). The combined file can be saved. Beginning with Imatest 5.1, direct acquisition of images from Sony sensor development boards through the Sony software tool is supported. This new feature allows Imatest to acquire the image directly from Sony, which eliminates the need to save images to file and load them individually into Imatest for analysis. This new feature allows Imatest to acquire the image directly from Sony, which eliminates the need to save images to file and load them individually into Imatest for analysis. 2025-03-24Uniformity measures lens vignetting (dropoff in illumination at the edges of the image) and other image nonuniformities. For example it can measure evenness of flash illumination (using light bounced off a white wall) or the uniformity of flatbed scanners. In Imatest, Uniformity can also analyze color shading (nonuniformity), hot and dead pixels, display a pixel level histogram, a grid (sector) plot, and a detailed image of fine nonuniformities (i.e., sensor noise). These features are described in Using Uniformity, Part 2.Uniformity Interactive is the interactive equivalent of Uniformity. Use it when you want to examine an image in detail. More details.InstructionsTo prepare an image for Uniformity,If possible, set your camera or lens to manual focus and focus it at infinity (the worst case for light falloff).Screen Pattern module for Uniformity.Photograph an evenly illuminated uniform subject.If you have a non-flickering monitor, a simple way to obtain a uniform subject is to photograph your computer monitor at a distance of 1-3 inches (2-8 cm) using the Imatest Screen Patterns module, shown on the right, to fill the monitor with a uniform white image. Click on Screen Patterns on the right of the Imatest main window, then maximize the screen. You can adjust the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness (H, S, and L, which default to 0,0,1) if required. This method is not recommended for laptop computers, which tend to flicker.An additional diffuser should be used, especially for extreme wide angle lenses or laptop screens with a limited viewing angle. We recommend using opal diffusing glass mounted close to the lens. Opal glass is available in the US from Edmund Optics. (We prefer the LCD monitor, but this approach may work in come cases.) Photograph an evenly-lit smooth matte sheet (white or gray). Be careful not to shade it. Outdoors illumination (shade) sometimes provides very even illumination. Getting uniform illumination can be a challenge with ultrawide lenses; it’s almost impossible to avoid shading part of the card.
