Comet Systems, developers of the CometCursor, unveiled the Cometized Banner, a new product for online advertisingthat automatically serves branded cursors in conjunction with banneradvertisements.The company also announced a strategic partnership with ad network 24/7 Media Inc. aimed at increasingbanner ad click-through via Cometized Banners. The Cometized Banner packages a traditional banner ad with a branded cursorthrough a proprietary process. The Cometized Banners can be served across the24/7 Network in the same manner as a traditional banner advertisements, andif the surfer’s browser is Comet Cursor-enabled, they will see a brandedcursor matching the advertising banner wherever they surf on the page.If the Web surfer’s browser is not Comet Cursor-enabled, they will continueto surf with a traditional “arrow” cursor. The Comet Cursor has beeninstalled by 13 million Web surfers, reaching approximately 20 percent of allonline users, according to the company.Several Cursor Ad tests have shown that adding a branded cursor to an onlinebanner caused click-throughs to rise from 50 percent to 300 percent withinthe Comet-enabled population, the company said. Under the terms of the partnership, 24/7 Media will work towards integratingthe Cometized Banner into the majority of its banner campaigns, and will alsointegrate Cursor Ads into tonline sponsorships. Comet Systems will charge24/7 Media an unspecified flat price per Cometized Banner, regardless of thenumber of banner impressions served. “We’ve been following the steady growth of the Comet Cursor and are impressedwith the technology’s ability to boost the performance of banner campaigns,”said Joe Apprendi, senior vice president of strategic sales at 24/7 Media. “The product has been proven to deliver a lift in two important ‘return oninvestment’ metrics — click-rate and brand impact.” Comet Systems said its technology is now used on more than 55,000 Web sites;licensees include Warner Bros. Online, AT&T WorldNet, Comedy Central, Mattel,and Universal Studios Online.

FindWhat.com, a provider of advertising-related search results, said Tuesday that it bought software company Comet Systems for about $33.5 million in cash and stock. Through the deal, Ft. Myers, Fla.-based FindWhat buys an array of consumer desktop software applications, giving the company greater distribution for its sponsored search-related ads. New York City-based Comet offers the Comet Cursor, an application for tailoring cursors that was the subject of privacy concerns during the Internet boom. It also offers software to block advertising and protect privacy, and a desktop search application that displays the commercial search results of FindWhat rival Overture Services. Under terms of the deal, which is expected to close in two months, Comet stockholders will receive about $8.5 million in cash, $15 million in FindWhat.com stock, and up to another $10 million in cash based on Comet's operating performance in the next two years. Comet, which employs about 30 people, will become a unit of FindWhat.com, co-managed by company founders Tom Schmitter and Jamie Rosen.
